2026 NEHRP Recommended Seismic Provisions Development Update
Application code: 4867As the foundation for seismic design requirements in the ASCE 7 Standard and the International Building Code (IBC), the NEHRP Recommended Seismic Provisions for New Buildings and Other Structures (NEHRP Recommended Provisions) reflects the latest science, engineering practice, and lessons learned from recent earthquakes. The 2026 update builds upon the ASCE 7-22 Seismic Chapters and incorporates modifications driven by new research, post-event reconnaissance, and practitioner feedback. All proposed updates undergo rigorous review by the Provisions Update Committee (PUC), a national consensus body convened under the Building Seismic Safety Council (BSSC) at the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS).
The forthcoming 2026 NEHRP Recommended Provisions addresses a wide range of critical topics, including: Functional recovery, Soil–structure interaction, Interfaces between structural elements, Ground motions and geotechnical concepts, Seismic design in very high hazard regions, Drift limits and two-stage analysis, Nonlinear analysis methods, Unification of diaphragm design provisions, Rocking system and buried structure design, and Balancing strength vs. ductility while nurturing engineering creativity.
This session will provide a comprehensive review of key changes included in the 2026 NEHRP Recommended Provisions, highlighting their technical basis, implications for practice, and anticipated adoption into ASCE 7 and the IBC.
